Membership Benefits

The Australian Society for Psychological Medicine aims to connect, train and support medical practitioners in the complex work of caring for the whole person through trauma-informed, strengths focused and culturally respectful approaches. We are passionate about caring for GPs and are aware of the high emotional load of this work on behalf of the community.

ASPM seeks to offer meaningful opportunities for connection and support to its members through:

  • Provision of high-quality training designed for the Australian general practice setting, in particular trainings designed by GPs for GPs in Focused Psychological Strategies Skills Training ("Level Two")
  • Conferences (annual or bi-annual) designed to develop practical skills in patient care and self-care along with invaluable opportunities to network with other like-minded practitioners
  • Access to up-to-date training in psychological skills through facilitated training and in house modules as they are developed
  • Small group Case Consultations provided by skilled facilitators and modelled on the principles of reflective practice. These groups provide a forum of peer support that facilitates review of clinical practice, patients, and self-care. They are invaluable forums for practitioners to meet and connect with other like-minded clinicians. Accreditation of these groups through RACGP and ACRRM are already in place. Guidelines to train members who are interested in becoming facilitators are being developed at this time
  • Monthly e-Newsletters and our Facebook Page keep you up-to-date with a host of relevant information such as training opportunities, clinical resources, research briefs, new books, book reviews
  • Free listings in monthly e-newsletter and the Events Calendar for training events run by members as well as opportunities for members to include notice of books or articles published
  • Optional listing in the ASPM online Member Directory
  • Access to a Notice Board section that includes opportunities to advertise information on consulting rooms and positions, locum opportunities and the like
  • Annual Certificates of Membership will be provided to all members as well as opportunities to use the ASPM logo for specific purposes
  • Opportunities to make a meaningful and stimulating contribution to the profession through joining like-minded colleagues on the ASPM committee and subcommittees

From our members:

“The ASPM has been a like-minded body of souls. They have provided me with courage and conviction in a changing and challenging world and I am proud to be a member.”
Dr Deb Wiens, Maroochydore, QLD

“As an isolated, regionally-located GP practicing exclusively in psychological medicine, the ASPM is my conduit to a remarkable group of deeply caring, experienced and insightful colleagues and ever-growing friendships which inform, challenge and inspire me in my endeavours to constantly improve the effectiveness of my work. It is by far the most valuable medical organisation to which I have ever belonged.”
Dr George Burkitt, Woolgoolga, NSW

“ASPM has provided a place for me to learn and share ideas, support and inspiration with clinicians who understand the kind of work I do every day as a Rural Generalist with advanced skills in mental health and addiction medicine”
