The Australian Society for Psychological Medicine comprises general practitioners and specialists from a variety of disciplines with an interest and skills in mental health care. Mental health problems are currently the second most common cause of morbidity in general practice and GPs provide more than 10 million mental health consultations per year. The Society aims to provide an Australia-wide peer support network to help GPs to increase their competency and confidence in managing mental health problems. The Society also supplies educational resources and opportunities, and promotes the interests of its members. It encourages self-care for doctors and community awareness of the doctor's role in mental health care. The Society works collaboratively with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and with mental health organisations. Individuals who are not medical practitioners, or who are working outside Australia, are welcome to participate in some Society activities by joining as Friends of the Society.
